Dear Friends,

How can we work together to amplify the abundance of Africa? The 2019 African Diaspora Investment Symposium seeks to align our work of bringing together global leaders for the common purpose of uplifting the Continent with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, an important blueprint for achieving a sustainable future globally and in Africa. However, according to the Stanford Social Innovation Review, these goals face an annual finance gap of $2.5 trillion dollars globally, significantly impacting Africa and its future.
Recognizing these funding gaps, the African Diaspora Network, from January 24-26, 2019 is hosting ADIS2019: Amplifying Abundance in Africa through Human Capital, Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Investment to offer an opportunity for deeper dialogue on how to align impact on the Continent with key financial and business structures. The reality is that talent in Africa is everywhere, yet funding continues to be a primary impediment.
Africa is a continent with 54 different countries with economies growing at different pace. As such, we need to find a multi-faceted solution that addresses challenges and opportunities country by country, region by region, and city by city. African Diaspora Network provides a platform for collaborative problem-solving that has sparked numerous ventures and partnerships. We encourage you to be a part of our journey as we aspire to amplify successes while acknowledging challenges. Together, we can amplify the abundance of the continent to meet our global goals of creating a more sustainable world.
As always, thank you and I look forward to seeing you at the ADIS19.
Thank you,

Almaz Negash

PRESS RELEASE

Project 1808, Inc. to host Fourth Science and Leadership Festival in Kabala, Koinadugu District.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Kabala, Wednesday, November 7, 2018: The Founder and chief strategist of Project 1808, Dr. Alhaji Njai, has said that next year’s Science and Leadership Festival, will be held in Kabala, in northern Sierra Leone. The event is slated for January 10-12, 2019 and organized under the theme: Leadership, Empowerment, and Job Opportunities.

Dr. Alhaji Njai, a Scientist from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Associate Professor in Biological Sciences at Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, stated that: “Science and technology are fundamental to the advancing quality of life in all societies and translating ideas to practice in communities requires effective, sometimes visionary leadership.”

A team of volunteers are expected from around Sierra Leone, the US and around the world to accompany Dr. N’jai and the Executive Director Dr. Linda Vakunta to the Kabala event.

According to Dr Njai, small pointed and targeted activities that builds science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics (STEAM) and leadership capacity among students, youths, and adults in the community will be implemented for the festival in Kabala. ‘The Sierra Leonean students will work with small groups of younger students on the day of the event, helping them to explore the worlds of biology, ecology, physics, chemistry, leadership, and more,” he added.

Next year’s events in Kabala will feature activities and curriculum written by Project 1808 global and local volunteers in partnership with and implemented by students and volunteers from Kabala, various partners in Sierra Leone and abroad.

In 2018, over 500 students and community members attended the festivals in Kabala and in Calaba Town/Wellington, Freetown, where they observed, experimented, and explored the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, ecology, leadership, and more etc. through hands-on experiments and demonstrations.  Last year’s microscopy station was the most popular station featuring a compound microscope and paper microscopes “Foldscopes” donated by Prof. Manu Prakash Lab at Stanford University.

Dr. Linda Vakunta, Executive Director for Project 1808, firmly believes that Science and Leadership are critical for solving basic challenges in society. “For young people, Science can enhance abilities to problem solving, and ability to evaluate evidence, which is linked to academic success,” she said.

More broadly, Project 1808 is a non-profit based in Madison, WI that has long been involved in youth capacity building and community development in Sierra Leone through a school-community-University partnership model. Project 1808 currently supports the education and wellbeing of over 400 students in the Koinadugu District of Sierra Leone through scholarships, after-school classes, computer literacy programs, and leadership opportunities.

Understanding and Owning Africa’s Identity

USING THE CREATIVE INDUSTRY FOR EFFECTIVE MESSAGING TOWARDS A ONE-GENERATION TURN-AROUND

Africa is renowned for its rich heritage, youthful population and boundless resources, despite which the continent still faces a myriad of challenges which currently impedes its development. In the past few decades, Africa has struggled with translating its rich natural resources, and the inherent spirit of creativity and innovation of its young people into economic advancement. Even though the governance structures at national and continental levels have intensified the focus on creating policy environments to accelerate development, a key component for Africa’s self-actualization remains largely ignored.
The mindset of people can either unlock the door to development, or conversely, shut off progress. A secure, confident and sound mindset could be the difference between Africa’s current reality and achieving our potential. As demonstrated by the 2018 African Union’s theme, Winning the Fight Against Corruption: A Sustainable Path for Africa’s Transformation, the fight against corruption requires the urgent task of transforming our minds. To win the fight and set Africa on the path to sustainable development, beyond an enabling policy environment, individual ideas and habits must align with the development agenda envisioned by the AU’s Agenda 2063. This is a foundational and crucial step towards achieving the Africa We Want.
The 2018 Young African Think’rs Convention (YATC) will focus on these issues - understanding and owning the mentalities, lifestyles and daily cultures in the continent. By taking an intentional and critical look into the reality, the convention strives to identify the key steps towards transforming individual mindsets to align with our aspirations for development. This will touch upon the areas of identity, worldview and using the creative industry as an influencer.

YATC 2018
