Seven Funding Opportunities for African Youth

The Youth Division, responsible for Africa’s Youth Agenda in the African Union Commission, seeking to strengthen African youth, has the pleasure to advertise the following funding opportunities for its young people. These opportunities seek to encourage young Africans to gain experience and explore areas that ultimately contribute towards Africa’s development.

1. Merck 350 Research Grants (up to EUR 350,000)
Get funding to work on challenging research topics on the occasion of Merck’s 350th anniversary.
Topic areas: Science and Technology.
Deadline: August 15th, 2018.
2. Misk Grand Challenges (up to $100,000)
Misk Grand Challenges launches new challenges every six months, offering 100 young innovators across the world a grant of $100,000 to develop their ingenious ideas into a concrete proof of concept.
Topic areas: Global Citizenship and Education
3. Tanzania Sudden Opportunity Grant (EUR 5,000- EUR 200,000)
Through this Sudden Opportunity Grant, Voice Tanzania is calling on Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to undertake collective action to address specific threats to marginalized and discriminated groups in Tanzania.
Target Groups:
  • Indigenous Groups and Ethnic Minorities;
  • Age-discriminated Vulnerable Groups (the young and the elderly);
  • Women Facing Exploitation, Abuse and/or Violence;
  • People Living with Disabilities.
Deadline: 31st December, 2018
4. Open Society Initiative for Eastern Africa (OSIEA)
Through a combination of grant making, advocacy and convening power, OSIEA is able to support and amplify the voices of pro-democracy organizations and individuals in the region and to strengthen their capacity to hold their governments accountable.
Programme areas:
  • Democratic governance and rule of law;
  • Economic governance;
  • Health and rights;
  • Equality and non-discrimination
Deadline: grant applications are accepted on an ongoing basis
5. IDEX Global Accelerator Fellowship 2018/2019
Our six-month fellowship is centered around 1:1 coaching, monthly mentoring workshops, curated readings, professional development challenges and relationship building with like-minded professionals that will last a lifetime.
Deadline: 15th March, 2018
6. All Bar None Scholarship 2018 (The Hague)
All Bar None is an initiative designed to ensure that outstanding young people from every country in the world are represented at the One Young World Summit 2018 in The Hague.
Participants should be between 18 and 30 years old at the time of the Summit.
Deadline: 2nd April, 2018
7. Young Women Transform Prize- RFA
The Young Women Transform Prize competition will result in awards to youth-serving or youth-led organizations in low and middle income countries to capture new evidence and approaches to improve young women’s economic opportunities.
