– A Reforming Catholic Confession –
A “Mere Protestant” Statement of Faith to mark the 500th anniversary of the Reformation
THE REFORMING CATHOLIC CONFESSIONWHAT WE, PROTESTANTS OF DIVERSE CHURCHES AND THEOLOGICAL TRADITIONS, SAY TOGETHER
“We believe…”
Triune God
That there is one God, infinitely great and good, the creator and sustainer of all things visible and invisible, the one true source of light and life, who has life in himself and lives eternally in glorious light and sovereign love in three persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Matt. 28:19; 2 Cor. 13:14) – co-equal in nature, majesty, and glory. Everything God does in creating, sustaining, judging, and redeeming the world reflects who God is, the one whose perfections, including love, holiness, knowledge, wisdom, power, and righteousness, have been revealed in the history of salvation. God has freely purposed from before the foundation of the world to elect and form a people for himself to be his treasured possession (Deut. 7:6), to the praise of his glory (Eph. 1:3-14).Holy Scripture
That God has spoken and continues to speak in and through Scripture, the only infallible and sufficiently clear rule and authority for Christian faith, thought, and life (sola scriptura). Scripture is God’s inspired and illuminating Word in the words of his servants (Psa. 119:105), the prophets and apostles, a gracious self-communication of God’s own light and life, a means of grace for growing in knowledge and holiness. The Bible is to be believed in all that it teaches, obeyed in all that it commands, trusted in all that it promises, and revered in all that it reveals (2 Tim 3:16).Human Beings
That God communicates his goodness to all creatures, but in particular to human beings, whom he has made in his own image, both male and female (Gen. 1:26-27), and accordingly that all men, women, and children have been graciously bestowed with inherent dignity (rights) and creaturely vocation (responsibilities).Fallenness
That the original goodness of creation and the human creature has been corrupted by sin, namely, the self-defeating choice of the first human beings to deny the Creator and the created order by going their own way, breaking God’s law for life (Rom. 3:23). Through disobedience to the law-giver, Adam and Eve incurred disorder instead of order (Rom. 8:20-21), divine condemnation instead of approval, and death instead of life for themselves and their descendants (Psa. 51:5; Rom. 5:12-20).Jesus Christ
That Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God become human for us and our salvation (John 3:17), the only Mediator (solus Christus) between God and humanity (1 Tim. 2:5), born of the virgin Mary, the Son of David and servant of the house of Israel (Rom. 1:3; 15:8), one person with two natures, truly God and truly man. He lived a fully human life, having entered into the disorder and brokenness of fallen existence, yet without sin, and in his words, deeds, attitude, and suffering embodied the free and loving communication of God’s own light (truth) and life (salvation). The Atoning Work of Christ
That God who is rich in mercy towards the undeserving has made gracious provision for human wrongdoing, corruption, and guilt, provisionally and typologically through Israel’s Temple and sin offerings, then definitively and gloriously in the gift of Jesus’ once-for-all sufficient and perfect sacrificial death on the cross (Rom. 6:10; 1 Pet. 3:18) in the temple of his human flesh (Heb. 10:11-12). By his death in our stead, he revealed God’s love and upheld God’s justice, removing our guilt, vanquishing the powers that held us captive, and reconciling us to God (Isa. 53:4-6; 2 Cor. 5:21; Col. 2:14-15). It is wholly by grace (sola gratia), not our own works or merits, that we have been forgiven; it is wholly by Jesus’ shed blood, not by our own sweat and tears, that we have been cleansed. The Gospel
That the gospel is the good news that the triune God has poured out his grace in the life, death, resurrection, and ascension of the Lord Jesus Christ, so that through his work we might have peace with God (Rom. 5:1). Jesus lived in perfect obedience yet suffered everything sinners deserved so that sinners would not have to pursue a righteousness of their own, relying on their own works, but rather through trust in him as the fulfillment of God’s promises could be justified by faith alone (sola fide) in order to become fellow heirs with him. Christ died in the place of sinners, absorbing the wages of sin (Rom. 6:23), so that those who entrust themselves to him also die with him to the power, penalty, and (eventually) practice of sin. Christ was raised the firstborn of a renewed and restored creation, so that those whom the Spirit unites to him in faith are raised up and created a new humanity in him (Eph. 2:15). Renewed in God’s image, they are thereby enabled to live out his life in them. One with Christ and made alive in him who is the only ground of salvation, sinners are reconciled with God – justified, adopted, sanctified, and eventually glorified children of the promise. The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit
That the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, the unseen yet active personal presence of God in the world, who unites believers to Christ, regenerating and making them new creatures (Tit. 3:5) with hearts oriented to the light and life of the kingdom of God and to peace and justice on earth. The Spirit indwells those whom he makes alive with Christ, through faith incorporates them into the body of Christ, and conforms them to the image of Christ so that they may glorify him as they grow in knowledge, wisdom, and love into mature sainthood, the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ (Eph. 4:13). The Spirit is the light of truth and fire of love who continues to sanctify the people of God, prompting them to repentance and faith, diversifying their gifts, directing their witness, and empowering their discipleship. The Church
That the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church is God’s new society, the first fruit of the new creation, the whole company of the redeemed through the ages, of which Christ is Lord and head. The truth that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, is the church’s firm foundation (Matt. 16:16-18; 1 Cor. 3:11). The local church is both embassy and parable of the kingdom of heaven, an earthly place where his will is done and he is now present, existing visibly everywhere two or three gather in his name to proclaim and spread the gospel in word and works of love, and by obeying the Lord’s command to baptize disciples (Matt. 28:19) and celebrate the Lord’s Supper (Luke 22:19).Baptism and Lord’s Supper
That these two ordinances, baptism and the Lord’s Supper, which some among us call “sacraments,” are bound to the Word by the Spirit as visible words proclaiming the promise of the gospel, and thus become places where recipients encounter the Word again. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper communicate life in Christ to the faithful, confirming them in their assurance that Christ, the gift of God for the people of God, is indeed “for us and our salvation” and nurturing them in their faith. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are physical focal points for key Reformation insights: the gifts of God (sola gratia) and the faith that grasps their promise (sola fide). They are tangible expressions of the gospel insofar as they vividly depict our dying, rising, and incorporation into Jesus’ body (“one bread … one body” – 1 Cor. 10:16-17), truly presenting Christ and the reconciliation he achieved on the cross. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper strengthen the faithful by visibly recalling, proclaiming, and sealing the gracious promise of forgiveness of sins and communion with God and one another through the peace-making blood of Christ (1 Cor. 11:26; Col. 1:20).Holy Living
That through participating in baptism and the Lord’s Supper, as well as prayer, the ministry of the Word, and other forms of corporate worship, we grow into our new reality as God’s people, a holy nation (1 Pet. 2:9, 10), called to put on Christ through his indwelling Spirit. It is through the Spirit’s enlivening power that we live in imitation of Christ as his disciples, individually and corporately, a royal priesthood that proclaims his excellent deeds and offers our bodies as spiritual sacrifices in right worship of God and sacrificial service to the world through works of love, compassion for the poor, and justice for the oppressed, always, everywhere and to everyone bearing wise witness to the way, truth, and life of Jesus Christ.Last Things
That in God’s own time and way, the bodily risen and ascended Christ will visibly return to consummate God’s purpose for the whole cosmos through his victory over death and the devil (1 Cor. 15:26). He will judge the world, consigning any who persist in unbelief to an everlasting fate apart from him, where his life and light are no more. Yet he will prepare his people as a bride for the marriage supper of the Lamb (Rev. 19:7-9), giving rest to restless hearts and life to glorified bodies (1 Cor. 15:42-44; Phil. 3:21) as they exult in joyful fellowship with their Lord and delight in the new heaven and the new earth (Rev. 21:1-2). There they shall reign with him (2 Tim. 2:12; Rev. 22:5) and see him face to face (1 Cor. 13:12; Rev. 22:4), forever rapt in wonder, love, and praise.Part II – The Explanation >>
.
EXPLANATION: A HISTORICAL & THEOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVEWhy we say what we say
Introduction: a reformation to laud, lament, or long for?
- The Protestant Reformers believed they were contending for “the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3) and recovering the gospel that some were “so quickly deserting” (Gal. 1:6). They therefore believed their efforts to be both catholic and evangelical, that is, on behalf of the whole church and for the sake of the integrity of the gospel, particularly the singularity and sufficiency of Christ’s person and saving work (solus Christus). On the eve of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, however, the narrative that prevails in some quarters focuses on its supposed negative consequences, including secularization, radical individualism, skepticism and, most notably, schism. According to this telling of the story, Protestants necessarily prove to be dividers, not uniters.
- That the world is divided – by race, class, age, gender, nation, politics, and religion – is as obvious as it is tragic. That Protestants are divided is equally obvious and, given our Lord’s prayer for unity (“that they may be one” – John 17:11), even more grievous. While we regret the divisions that have followed in its wake, we acknowledge the need for the sixteenth-century Reformation, even as we recognize the hopeful possibilities of the present twenty-first century moment. Not every denominational or doctrinal difference is a division, certainly not an insurmountable one. We dare hope that the unity to which the Reformers aspired may be increasingly realized as today’s “mere” Protestants, like Richard Baxter’s and C. S. Lewis’s “mere Christians,” joyfully join together to bear united witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ and to its length, depth, breadth, and width – in a word, its catholicity. We therefore aim to celebrate the catholic impulse that lies at the heart of the earlier Reformation even as we hope and pray for ever greater displays of our substantial unity in years to come.
The challenge to be protestant: from reformation to “reforming catholic”
The “catholic” Reformation
- The Reformation itself was the culmination of a centuries-long process of reform. More pointedly: the Reformation was quintessentially catholic precisely because of its concern for the triune God of the gospel. The Reformation was as much about catholicity in the formal sense of the term (i.e., universal scope, related to the principle of the priesthood of all believers), as canonicity (the supreme authority of Scripture). The Reformers also affirmed the material sense of catholicity (i.e., historical consensus; continuity in doctrinal substance) in retrieving the great tradition of the church fathers, insofar as it was in accordance with the Scriptures. In sum: the Reformers directed their protest against the Roman Catholic Church not at the concept of catholicity but towards those unwarranted dogmas based on an appeal to human tradition rather than Scripture. What protests the Reformers made were ultimately lodged on behalf of the one holy catholic and apostolic church.
- The Reformers were persons of one book – and one church. Accordingly, they had a healthy respect for tradition and councils alike. Tradition at its best is the biblically sanctioned practice of handing on the good news of Jesus Christ received from the apostles (see 1 Cor. 11:2; 2 Th. 2:15, 3:6). Having set apart certain written witnesses to the gospel to form the New Testament documents, the Spirit proceeded to guide (and continues to guide) the church into a right understanding of these foundational texts (John 15:26; 16:13). While we repudiate the “traditions of men” (Mark 7:8) – teachings that conflict with or have no clear basis in Scripture – we affirm tradition insofar as it refers to the church’s continuous attention to and deepening understanding of the apostolic teaching through time and across space. Such tradition is a vital means by which the Spirit ministers the truth of Scripture and causes it to pass into the consciousness and life of the global church. This consensual understanding was first formulated in the Rule of Faith, itself a summary of and orientation to the storyline and subject matter of Scripture. Tradition plays the role of (fallible) stream from Scripture’s (infallible) source, a moon to Scripture’s sun: what light it offers ultimately reflects the divine revelation in Scripture, which is materially sufficient (semper reformanda – “always reforming”).
- The Reformers acknowledged that church councils stand under the authority of Scripture, and can sometimes err. A conciliar decree is authoritative only insofar as it is true to Scripture. Yet, given the weight of orthodox judgment and catholic consensus, individuals and churches do well to follow the example of the Reformers and accept as faithful interpretations and entailments of Scripture the decisions of the councils of Nicaea (325), Constantinople (381), Ephesus (431), and Chalcedon (451) concerning the nature of the Triune God and Jesus Christ.
- The Reformers earnestly affirmed, expounded, and elaborated what is implicit in these early creeds: that the Trinity is vital to the gospel and that the gospel presupposes the Trinity. The Reformers saw that the doctrine of the Trinity was theological shorthand for the whole economy of redemption: through faith alone (sola fide) in God’s Son alone (solus Christus), the Spirit of adoption enlarges the family of God, enabling those who have faith to become children of God (John 1:12), able to approach God as Jesus did, crying “Abba, Father” (Rom. 8:15).
- The catholicity of the Protestant Reformation is understood both in terms of its appropriation of creedal orthodoxy and its renewed appreciation for the centrality of God’s grace, uniqueness of Christ, and forgiveness of sins. The Nicene emphasis on the homoousios of the Son with the Father preserved the integrity of the gospel by clarifying the nature of its central character, answering Jesus’ own question, “Who do you say that I am?” by identifying him as “very God of very God” (the God of the gospel), healer of humanity and entryway into the divine life – the salvation of God (Luke 3:6). Whereas Nicaea and Chalcedon focus on the integrity of the Son’s divinity and humanity for the sake of soteriology, the Protestant Reformers focus on God’s saving acts themselves, thus plumbing even greater depths of the good news that the triune God graciously communicates his own light and life in love with his “two hands,” Son and Spirit.
- The Reformers’ robust emphasis on the gospel as the saving activity of the triune God also led them to view the church as called forth by the gospel, a community of believers vitally united to Christ, and to one another, by the Spirit, through faith. In Christ, the church comprises a new humanity, the harbinger of the new creation. This conception of the church as an organic fellowship under the lordship of Christ, ruled by Scripture as his sufficient word and illumined by the Spirit, led the Reformers to correct certain misunderstandings and problematic practices of the church’s leadership, ministry, and sacraments.
- In sum, the Reformation was an appropriation and further development of the seminal patristic convictions presupposed by the Rule of Faith, the Apostles’ and Niceno-Constantinopolitan creeds, and the Chalcedonian definition, particularly as these clarified the doctrine of the Trinity and Incarnation, essential conditions for the integrity of the gospel. The solas (grace alone, faith alone, Scripture alone) enabled a deeper insight into the logic and substance of the gospel as well as the unique significance of the person and work of Jesus Christ and, as such, stand in continuity with the whole (catholic) church, even as they represent a genuine elaboration of faith’s understanding.
The present problem
- Critical voices describe sola scriptura as the “sin” of the Reformation, and the priesthood of all believers as Christianity’s dangerous idea. That individual interpreters can read the supreme authority of faith and life for themselves unleashed interpretive anarchy on the world, it is claimed. The historical record is irrefutable: Protestants disagreed amongst themselves and begat not one but many church families and traditions. We acknowledge that Protestants have not always handled doctrinal and interpretive differences in a spirit of charity and humility, but in making common confession, as we here do, we challenge the idea that every difference or denominational distinction necessarily leads to division.
- It is a fallacy to argue that the divisions that followed from the Reformation were its inevitable consequences. The accidental truths of European history should never become necessary conclusions about the spirit of Protestantism. Nevertheless, it is particularly to be regretted that the early Protestant Reformers were unable to achieve an altogether common mind, in particular as concerns the doctrine of the Lord’s Supper. We believe these divisive doctrinal disagreements stemmed not from the fundamental principles of the Reformation, but from their imperfect application due to human finitude, fallibility, and the vagaries of historical and political circumstance. Nor can we deny that they sometimes succumbed to the ever-present temptations of pride, prejudice, and impatience.
Our “reforming catholic” (“mere Protestant”) aim
- “Is Christ divided?” (1 Cor. 1:13). Various sixteenth-century Protestant groups – including Lutheran, Reformed, Anglican, and some Anabaptists – produced confessions that not only demarcated their respective identities but also, and more crucially, established their catholic bona fides. In view of their catholic credentials, the common notion that Protestants are theological innovators who are hopelessly divided over doctrine because of a lack of centralized authority is an unwarranted caricature. On the contrary: as mere Protestants, we all acknowledge the Triune God of the gospel and the gospel of the triune God, including the supremacy of the Lord Jesus Christ and the biblical testimony about him. While we continue to disagree about the particular form and content of certain doctrines, we together affirm God’s Word as the singular and ultimate authority to which we must all submit our respective interpretations for judgment. Our interpretive disagreements must therefore be viewed in the context of our even greater agreements about Scripture. It is in this spirit, with hope and prayer, that we together confess our common faith.
- To confess the supreme authority of Scripture and the oneness of the church as the people of God becomes a moot point, however, if Protestant churches cannot muster enough doctrinal agreement to declare their unity in concrete ways. While it is tempting to focus on and exaggerate the differences, we want here to strengthen the Protestant cause by focusing on the doctrinal beliefs we have in common, not least for the sake of our common witness to the truth and power of the gospel. Protestants today need to recover the promise of the Reformation and repudiate its pathologies. This is our primary aim.
- We do not intend the present statement to replace the confessional statements of the various confessional traditions and churches here represented but rather to express our shared theological identity as mere Protestants through our common testimony to the triune God of the gospel (we are catholic) and the gospel of the triune God (we are still reforming – constantly praying and working to ensure that our faith conforms to the Word of God). This Christ-centered consensus is a concrete gesture of the unity we already enjoy as members of Christ’s one church.
- What we offer is not a harmony of Protestant confessions, or an attempt to discover our lowest common doctrinal denominator, much less a charter for a new denominational entity or ecumenical organization. Rather, our statement aims at displaying an interdenominational unity in the essentials of the faith and agreement that the Word of God alone has final jurisdiction – hence “mere” (focused on the essentials) “Protestant” (founded on the Bible).
- This statement challenges the trend in church and society alike toward increasing polarization. We seek to recover the evangelical and confessional “unitive Protestantism” expressed by the solas that was the original driving force behind the Reformation. We believe that what unites us is far greater than what divides us.
- “I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment” (1 Cor. 1:10). The Protestant Reformers were not indifferent to this appeal. Several attempts were made to reconcile differences over interpretations of Scripture, for instance regarding baptism and the Lord’s Supper. In response to the Pauline injunction, and in the spirit of the Protestant Reformers at their best, then, we humbly set forth our reforming catholic confession: reforming, because we do not pretend to have captured all biblical truth; catholic, because we stand in continuity with the consensus tradition of the ancient and medieval church even as we contribute to it; and humbly, because we know that apart from the light, life, and love of God’s Word, and the grace of God’s Spirit, we will divide Christ even further.
- We primarily see ourselves not as Protestants defining themselves against others but rather as mere Protestant Christians who affirm the common spiritual tradition to which creedal Christianity bears eloquent witness. Some of us have been further “denominated” into particular Protestant family traditions and others not. Yet we all value the Reformation solas, not simply because they distinguish us from Roman Catholic or Eastern Orthodox Christians, but rather because they are salient reminders to the whole church that God alone saves in Christ alone through faith alone.
- We reiterate that the afore-mentioned Christian creeds ought to be gratefully received and affirmed as faithfully representing the being and activity of the one God in three persons that is the subject of the biblical witness: the God of the gospel and the gospel of God. Our reforming catholic confession sets forth the catholic substance of the faith (the consensual tradition worked out over the first few centuries of church history about the triune God) according to the Protestant principles of the faith (sola scriptura, sola gratia, sola fide).
- We set forth our confession as those who stand on the shoulders of our Reformation forbears and their Catholic and Orthodox ancestors (i.e., patristic and medieval theologians), and ultimately on the only enduring foundation of the faith: the written Word of God that attests the good news of the living Word of God made flesh, who dwelt among us (John 1:14), died for us, and lives in us.
To be continued: a reforming catholic way forward
- We are under no illusion that the statement of our mere Protestant faith will suddenly usher in a millennial age of church unity. We continue to appreciate the distinctive emphases of our respective churches, denominations, and confessional traditions. We wish to discuss our remaining differences in a spirit not of divisiveness but discipleship: like the two men who met Jesus on the road to Emmaus, our hearts continue to burn as we discuss the meaning of the things that happened to Jesus in Jerusalem.
- We recall and commend John Wesley’s plea that Protestants display a catholic spirit, a call for right-hearted believers to give up their prideful insistence on their right opinions in order to establish right relations with others whose hearts and minds are set on following Jesus according to the Scriptures. We resolve to rededicate ourselves to dialogue in, with, and for the communion of saints, and not to settle for thinking and doing things separately that we can in good conscience think and do together, for the sake of our common witness to the one church of Jesus Christ.
- The Protestant, reforming catholic way forward is that of dialogical, “table-talk” unity based on a fundamental agreement on matters integral to the biblical gospel and on a willingness to keep conversing about the doctrinal differences that remain, with Scripture as our common judge. We acknowledge that our own churches are not the only ones who are in communion with the living Lord, and that we are not the only ones to seek to read Scripture faithfully. We therefore seek continuing reformation by the God of the gospel and the gospel of God.
- Like the sixteenth-century Reformers who met at the Marburg Colloquy, the congrégations who met weekly in Geneva and Zwingli’s Prophezei in Zurich or the Anabaptist practice of lex sedentium, we confess, in the words of the Harmony of Confessions of Faith, taken from Ambrose of Milan, “There ought to be no strife, but conference, among the servants of Christ.” We commit ourselves to the study of God’s word with one another, with the Reformers and the early church: “When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up” (1 Cor. 14:26).
- We recognize that the kind of table-talk that produces consensus takes time and requires continual effort, prayer, and vigilance, and we are grateful to God for the gift of time he has given the church, not least the past five hundred years, during which we have all come to a deeper understanding of the gospel, especially by reading Scripture in the communion of the saints and conversing in Protestant conference. We therefore resolve, with God’s help, to recognize and honor our distinctions even as we resist schism, seeking to achieve greater unity as we continue the discussion, humbly listening to one another as we together hearken to God’s word.

One of the best ways to commemorate the Reformation is to remember the Reformers’ original vision for Catholic unity under canonical authority. This original vision has sometimes been forgotten not only by the heirs of the Reformation, but also by its critics, who often fixate on the divisions within Protestantism. Thus, a number of leaders from across the Protestant spectrum have come together to honor the original vision of the Reformers by demonstrating that, despite our genuine differences, there is a significant and substantial doctrinal consensus that unites us as “mere Protestants.”
Dozens of Protestant theologians have joined together to produce this Reforming Catholic Confession which has already been endorsed by several hundred church leaders. We invite other believers around the world to unite with us in this joyful confession of our common faith.

Chapter 4—God's Last Day Church
God's People Keep His Commandments
God
has a church on earth who are lifting up the downtrodden law, and
presenting to the world the Lamb of God that taketh away the sins of the
world....
There
is but one church in the world who are at the present time standing in
the breach and making up the hedge, building up the old waste places....
Let
all be careful not to make an outcry against the only people who are
fulfilling the description given of the remnant people, who keep the
commandments of God and have faith in Jesus.... God has a distinct
people, a church on earth, second to none, but superior to all in their
facilities to teach the truth, to vindicate the law of God.... My
brother, if you are teaching that the Seventh-day Adventist Church is
Babylon, you are wrong.—Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, 50, 58, 59 (1893). [The book of Revelation focuses on two sets of God's people—the visible remnant (12:17) and “My people” in Babylon (18:4). This chapter deals with the former, and chapter 14, “The Loud Cry,” deals with the latter.]
They Have the Testimony of Jesus
As
the end draws near and the work of giving the last warning to the world
extends, it becomes more important for those who accept present truth
to have a clear understanding of the nature and influence of the
testimonies, which God in His providence has linked with the work of the
third angel's message from its very rise.—Testimonies for the Church 5:654 (1889).
Men
may get up scheme after scheme and the enemy will seek to seduce souls
from the truth, but all who believe that the Lord has spoken through
Sister White and has given her a message will be safe from the many
delusions that will come in these last days.—Selected Messages 3:83, 84 (1906).
There
will be those who will claim to have visions. When God gives you clear
evidence that the vision is from Him, you may accept it, but do not
accept it on any other evidence, for people are going to be led more and
more astray in foreign countries and in America.—Selected Messages 2:72 (1905).
Their “Landmark” Biblical Doctrines
The
passing of the time in 1844 was a period of great events, opening to
our astonished eyes the cleansing of the sanctuary transpiring in
heaven, and having decided relation to God's people upon the earth,
[also] the first and second angels’ messages and the third, unfurling
the banner on which was inscribed, “The
commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.” One of the landmarks under
this message was the temple of God, seen by His truth-loving people in
heaven, and the ark containing the law of God. The light of the Sabbath
of the fourth commandment flashed its strong rays in the pathway of the
transgressors of God's law. The nonimmortality of the wicked is an old
landmark. I can call to mind nothing more that can come under the head
of the old landmarks.—Counsels to Writers and Editors, 30, 31 (1889).
The Distinctive Mission of Seventh-day Adventists
The
Lord has made us the depositaries of His law; He has committed to us
sacred and eternal truth, which is to be given to others in faithful
warnings, reproofs, and encouragement.—Testimonies for the Church 5:381 (1885).
Seventh-day
Adventists have been chosen by God as a peculiar people, separate from
the world. By the great cleaver of truth He has cut them out from the
quarry of the world and brought them into connection with Himself. He
has made them His representatives and has called them to be ambassadors
for Him in the last work of salvation. The greatest wealth of truth ever
entrusted to mortals, the most solemn and fearful warnings ever sent by
God to man, have been committed to them to be given to the world.—Testimonies for the Church 7:138 (1902).
In
a special sense Seventh-day Adventists have been set in the world as
watchmen and light bearers. To them has been entrusted the last warning
for a perishing world.
On them is shining wonderful light from the Word of God. They have been
given a work of the most solemn import—the proclamation of the first,
second, and third angels’ messages. There is no other work of so great
importance. They are to allow nothing else to absorb their attention.—Testimonies for the Church 9:19 (1909).
Reasons Why the Seventh-day Adventist Church Was Organized
As
our numbers increased it was evident that without some form of
organization there would be great confusion, and the work would not be
carried forward successfully. To provide for the support of the
ministry, for carrying the work in new fields, for protecting both the
churches and the ministry from unworthy members, for holding church
property, for the publication of the truth through the press, and for
many other objects, organization was indispensable....
Light
was given by His Spirit that there must be order and thorough
discipline in the church—that organization was essential. System and
order are manifest in all the works of God throughout the universe.
Order is the law of heaven, and it should be the law of God's people on
the earth.—Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, 26 (1902).
Organization Will Always Be Essential
Unless the churches are so organized that they can carry out and enforce order, they have nothing to hope for in the future.—Testimonies For The Church 1:270 (1862).
Oh,
how Satan would rejoice if he could succeed in his efforts to get in
among this people and disorganize the work at a time when thorough
organization is essential and will be the greatest power to keep out
spurious uprisings and to refute claims not endorsed by the Word of God!
We want to hold the lines evenly, that there shall be no breaking down
of the system of organization and order that has been built up by wise,
careful labor. License must not be given to disorderly elements that
desire to control the work at this time.
Some
have advanced the thought that, as we near the close of time, every
child of God will act independently of any religious organization. But I
have been instructed by the Lord that in this work there is no such
thing as every man's being independent. [From manuscript read before the delegates at the General Conference Session, Washington, D.C., May 30, 1909.]—Testimonies for the Church 9:257, 258 (1909).
As
we near the final crisis, instead of feeling that there is less need of
order and harmony of action, we should be more systematic than
heretofore.—Selected Messages 3:26 (1892).
The Special Authority of God's Church
God
has invested His church with special authority and power which no one
can be justified in disregarding and despising, for in so doing he
despises the voice of God.—Testimonies for the Church 3:417 (1875).
God has bestowed the highest power under heaven upon His church. It is the voice of God in His united people in church capacity which is to be respected.—Testimonies for the Church 3:451 (1875).
A Time of Spiritual Weakness and Blindness
I
was confirmed in all I had stated in Minneapolis, that a reformation
must go through the churches. Reforms must be made, for spiritual
weakness and blindness were upon the people who had been blessed with
great light and precious opportunities and privileges. As reformers they
had come out of the denominational churches, but they now act a part
similar to that which the churches acted. We hoped that there would not
be the necessity for another coming out. [This
is the only known statement from the pen of Ellen White indicating that
she might have lost confidence in the Seventh-day Adventist Church
organization. The doubt which she expressed here was never repeated
during the remaining twenty-six years of her life.] While we will
endeavor to keep the “unity of the Spirit” in the bonds of peace, we
will not with pen or voice cease to protest against bigotry.—The Ellen G. White 1888 Materials, 356, 357 (1889).
Of
those who boast of their light and yet fail to walk in it Christ says,
“But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at
the day of judgment than for you. And thou, Capernaum [Seventh-day
Adventists, who have had great light], which art exalted unto heaven [in
point of privilege], shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty
works which have been done in thee had been done in Sodom, it would have
remained until this day.”—The Review and Herald, August 1, 1893. [The bracketed comments are by Ellen White.]
The church is in the Laodicean state. The presence of God is not in her midst.—Notebook Leaflets 1:99 (1898).
Abuse of Power at Church Headquarters
The General Conference is itself becoming corrupted with wrong sentiments and principles....
Men
have taken unfair advantage of those whom they supposed to be under
their jurisdiction. They were determined to bring the individuals to
their terms; they would rule or ruin....
The
high-handed power that has been developed, as though position has made
men gods, makes me afraid, and ought to cause fear. It is a curse
wherever and by whomsoever it is exercised.—Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, 359-361 (1895).
There
are altogether too many weighty responsibilities given to a few men,
and some do not make God their Counselor. What do these men know of the
necessities of the work in foreign countries? How can they know how to
decide the questions which come to them asking for information? It would
require three months for those in foreign countries to receive a
response to their questions, even if there was no delay in writing.—Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, 321 (1896).
Those
living in distant countries will not do that which their judgment tells
them is right unless they first send for permission to Battle Creek.
Before they will advance they await Yes or No from that place.—Special Testimonies, Series A 9:32 (1896).
It
is not wise to choose one man as president of the General Conference.
The work of the General Conference has extended, and some things have
been made unnecessarily complicated. A want of discernment has been
shown. There should be a division of the field, or some other plan
should be devised to change the present order of things.—Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, 342 (1896). [The
Seventh-day Adventist Church was organized in 1863 with 3,500 members,
half a dozen local conferences, about thirty ministerial laborers, and a
General Conference Committee of three. The General Conference president
was well able to provide the leadership and counsel required by such a
small organization. He could personally attend every important meeting
and in addition give personal attention to much of the business
connected with the publishing work. However, by 1896 the work of the
church had greatly expanded in the United States, and extended to
Europe, Australia, and Africa as well. It was no longer possible for one
man to give adequate supervision and direction to such a widespreading
work. Ellen White urged a division of the field, so that our church
members around the world would not look to just one man for counsel.
This was accomplished by the creation of union conferences and world
divisions.]
Unwise Leaders Do Not Speak for God
The
voice from Battle Creek, which has been regarded as authority in
counseling how the work should be done, is no longer the voice of God.—Manuscript Releases 17:185 (1896).
It has been some years since I have considered the General Conference as the voice of God.—Manuscript Releases 17:216 (1898).
That these men should stand in a sacred place, to be as the voice of God to the people, as we once believed the General Conference to be—that is past.—The General Conference Bulletin, April 3, 1901, p. 25.
A New Denomination Not Needed
You will take passages in the Testimonies
that speak of the close of probation, of the shaking among God's
people, and you will talk of a coming out from this people of a purer,
holier people that will arise. Now all this pleases the enemy.... Should
many accept the views you advance, and talk and act upon them, we would
see one of the greatest fanatical excitements that has ever been
witnessed among Seventh-day Adventists. This is what Satan wants.—Selected Messages 1:179 (1890).
The
Lord has not given you a message to call the Seventh-day Adventists
Babylon, and to call the people of God to come out of her. All the
reasons you may present cannot have weight with me on this subject,
because the Lord has given me decided light that is opposed to such a
message....
I
know that the Lord loves His church. It is not to be disorganized or
broken up into independent atoms. There is not the least consistency in
this; there is not the least evidence that such a thing will be.—Selected Messages 2:63, 68, 69 (1893).
I
tell you, my brethren, the Lord has an organized body through whom He
will work.... When anyone is drawing apart from the organized body of
God's commandment-keeping people, when he begins to weigh the church in
his human scales and begins to pronounce judgment against them, then you may know that God is not leading him. He is on the wrong track.—Selected Messages 3:17, 18 (1893).
God Will Set Everything in Order
There
is no need to doubt, to be fearful that the work will not succeed. God
is at the head of the work, and He will set everything in order. If
matters need adjusting at the head of the work God will attend to that,
and work to right every wrong. Let us have faith that God is going to
carry the noble ship which bears the people of God safely into port.—Selected Messages 2:390 (1892).
Has
God no living church? He has a church, but it is the church militant,
not the church triumphant. We are sorry that there are defective
members, that there are tares amid the wheat.... Although there are
evils existing in the church, and will be until the end of the world,
the church in these last days is to be the light of the world that is
polluted and demoralized by sin. The church, enfeebled and defective,
needing to be reproved, warned, and counseled, is the only object upon
earth upon which Christ bestows His supreme regard.—Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, 45, 49 (1893).
The
bulwarks of Satan will never triumph. Victory will attend the third
angel's message. As the Captain of the Lord's host tore down the walls
of Jericho, so will the Lord's commandment-keeping people triumph, and
all opposing elements be defeated.—Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, 410 (1898).
Distribution of Responsibility Urged
What we want now is a reorganization. We want to begin at the foundation, and to build upon a different principle....
Here
are men who are standing at the head of our various institutions, of
the educational interests, and of the conferences in different
localities and in different States. All these are to stand as
representative men, to have a voice in molding and fashioning the plans
that shall be carried out. There are to be more than one or two or three
men to consider the whole vast field. The work is great, and there is
no one human mind that can plan for the work which needs to be done....
Now
I want to say, God has not put any kingly power in our ranks to control
this or that branch of the work. The work has been greatly restricted
by the efforts to control it in every line.... There must be a
renovation, a reorganization; a power and strength must be brought into
the committees that are necessary.” [From Ellen White's opening address on April 2, 1901, to the General Conference Session in Battle Creek.]—The General Conference Bulletin, April 3, 1901, pp. 25, 26.
New
Conferences must be formed. It was in the order of God that the Union
conference was organized in Australasia.... It is not necessary to send
thousands of miles to Battle Creek for advice, and then have to wait
weeks for an answer. Those who are right on the ground are to decide
what shall be done.—The General Conference Bulletin, April 5, 1901, pp. 69, 70.
The 1901 General Conference Session Responds
Who
do you suppose has been among us since this Conference began? Who has
kept away the objectionable features that generally appear in such a
meeting? Who has walked up and down the aisles of this Tabernacle? The
God of heaven and His angels. And they did not come here to tear you in
pieces, but to give you right and peaceable minds. They have been among
us to work the works of God, to keep back the powers of darkness, that
the work God designed should be done should not be hindered. The angels
of God have been working among us....
I
was never more astonished in my life than at the turn things have taken
at this meeting. This is not our work. God has brought it about.
Instruction regarding this was presented to me, but until the sum was
worked out at this meeting I could not comprehend this instruction.
God's angels have been walking up and down in this congregation. I want
every one of you to remember this, and I want you to remember also that
God has said that He will heal the wounds of His people.—The General Conference Bulletin, April 25, 1901, pp. 463, 464.
During
the General Conference the Lord wrought mightily for His people. Every
time I think of that meeting, a sweet solemnity comes over me, and sends
a glow of gratitude to my soul. We have seen the stately steppings of
the Lord our Redeemer. We praise His holy name, for He has brought
deliverance to His people.—The Review and Herald, November 26, 1901.
It
has been a necessity to organize union conferences, that the General
Conference shall not exercise dictation over all the separate
conferences. The power vested in the Conference is not to be centered in
one man, or two men, or six men; there is to be a council of men over
the separate divisions.—Manuscript 26, 1903 (April 3). [For further information regarding organizational changes made at the 1901 General Conference Session see the Seventh-day Adventist Encyclopedia (Vol. 10 of the Commentary Reference Series), Revised Edition, pp. 1050-1053.]
Confidence in SDA Organization Reaffirmed
We
cannot now step off the foundation that God has established. We cannot
now enter into any new organization, for this would mean apostasy from
the truth.—Selected Messages 2:390 (1905).
I
am instructed to say to Seventh-day Adventists the world over, God has
called us as a people to be a peculiar treasure unto Himself. He has
appointed that His church on earth shall stand perfectly united in the
Spirit and counsel of the Lord of hosts to the end of time.—Selected Messages 2:397 (1908).
At
times, when a small group of men entrusted with the general management
of the work have, in the name of the General Conference, sought to carry
out unwise plans to restrict God's work, I have said that I could no
longer regard the voice of the General Conference, represented by these
few men, as the voice of God. But this is not saying that the decisions
of a General Conference composed of an assembly of duly appointed,
representative men from all parts of the field should not be respected.
God
has ordained that the representatives of His church from all parts of
the earth, when assembled in a General Conference, shall have authority.
The error that some are in danger of committing is in giving to the
mind and judgment of one man, or of a small group of men, the full
measure of authority and influence that God has invested in His church
in the judgment and voice of the General Conference assembled to plan
for the prosperity and advancement of His work.—Testimonies for the Church 9:260, 261 (1909).
God
has invested His church with special authority and power which no one
can be justified in disregarding and despising, for he who does this
despises the voice of God.—The Acts of the Apostles, 164 (1911).
I
am encouraged and blessed as I realize that the God of Israel is still
guiding His people and that He will continue to be with them, even to
the end.—Selected Messages 2:406 (1913). [From
Ellen White's final message to the Seventh-day Adventist Church in
General Conference Session. These reassuring words were read to the
session by the General Conference president, A. G. Daniells, on May 27,
1913.]
A Statement by W. C. White
I told her [Mrs. Lida Scott] how Mother regarded the experience of the remnant church, and of her positive
teaching that God would not permit this denomination to so fully
apostatize that there would be the coming out of another church.—W. C.
White to E. E. Andross, May 23, 1915, White Estate Correspondence File.
Spiritual Revival Still Needed
One
day at noon I was writing of the work that might have been done at the
last [1901] General Conference if the men in positions of trust had
followed the will and way of God. Those who have had great light have
not walked in the light. The meeting was closed, and the break was not
made. Men did not humble themselves before the Lord as they should have
done, and the Holy Spirit was not imparted.
I had written thus far when I lost consciousness, and I seemed to be witnessing a scene in Battle Creek.
We
were assembled in the auditorium of the Tabernacle. Prayer was offered,
a hymn was sung, and prayer was again offered. Most earnest
supplication was made to God. The meeting was marked by the presence of
the Holy Spirit....
No
one seemed to be too proud to make heartfelt confession, and those who
led in this work were the ones who had influence, but had not before had
courage to confess their sins.
There was rejoicing such as never before had been heard in the Tabernacle.
Then
I aroused from my unconsciousness, and for a while could not think
where I was. My pen was still in my hand. The words were spoken to me: “This might have been.
All this the Lord was waiting to do for His people. All heaven was
waiting to be gracious.” I thought of where we might have been had
thorough work been done at the last General Conference.—Testimonies for the Church 8:104-106 (January 5, 1903).
I
have been deeply impressed by scenes that have recently passed before
me in the night season. There seemed to be a great movement—a work of
revival—going forward in many places. Our people were moving into line,
responding to God's call.—Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, 515 (1913). [From Ellen White's first message to the General Conference Session of 1913.]
The Patience of God With His People
The
church has failed, sadly failed, to meet the expectations of her
Redeemer, and yet the Lord does not withdraw Himself from His people. He
bears with them still, not because of any goodness found in them, but
that His name may not be dishonored before the enemies of truth and
righteousness, that the satanic agencies may not triumph in the
destruction of God's people. He has borne long with their waywardness,
unbelief and folly. With wonderful forbearance and compassion He has
disciplined them. If they will heed His instruction He will cleanse away
their perverse tendencies, saving them with an everlasting salvation
and making them eternal monuments of the power of His grace.—The Signs of the Times, November 13, 1901.
We should remember that the church, enfeebled and defective though it be, is the only object on earth
on which Christ bestows His supreme regard. He is constantly watching
it with solicitude, and is strengthening it by His Holy Spirit.—Selected Messages 2:396 (1902).
God Works With Those Who Are Faithful to Him
The
Lord Jesus will always have a chosen people to serve Him. When the
Jewish people rejected Christ, the Prince of life, He took from them the
kingdom of God and gave it unto the Gentiles. God will continue to work
on this principle with every branch of His work.
When
a church proves unfaithful to the word of the Lord, whatever their
position may be, however high and sacred their calling, the Lord can no
longer work with them. Others are then chosen to bear important
responsibilities. But, if these in turn do not purify their lives from
every wrong action, if they do not establish pure and holy principles in
all their borders, then the Lord will grievously afflict and humble
them and, unless they repent, will remove them from their place and make
them a reproach.—Manuscript Releases 14:102 (1903).
Judged by the Light Bestowed
In
the balances of the sanctuary the Seventh-day Adventist church is to be
weighed. She will be judged by the privileges and advantages that she
has had. If her spiritual experience does not correspond to the
advantages that Christ, at infinite cost, has bestowed on her, if the
blessings conferred have not qualified her to do the work entrusted to
her, on her will be pronounced the sentence: “Found wanting.” By the light bestowed, the opportunities given, will she be judged....
Solemn admonitions of warning, manifest in the destruction of dearly cherished facilities [The
Battle Creek Sanitarium, the largest and best-known Adventist
institution in the world, burned to the ground February 18, 1902. this
was followed by the destruction of the Review and Herald Publishing
Association, also by fire, on December 30, 1902.] for service, say to us: “Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works” (Revelation 2:5)....
Unless
the church, which is now being leavened with her own backsliding, shall
repent and be converted, she will eat of the fruit of her own doing,
until she shall abhor herself. When she resists the evil and chooses the
good, when she seeks God with all humility and reaches her high calling
in Christ, standing on the platform of eternal truth and by faith
laying hold upon the attainments prepared for her, she will be healed.
She will appear in her God-given simplicity and purity, separate from
earthly entanglements, showing that the truth has made her free indeed.
Then her members will indeed be the chosen of God, His representatives.—Testimonies for the Church 8:247-251 (April 21, 1903).
Israel's History a Warning to Us
In
these last days God's people will be exposed to the very same dangers
as were ancient Israel. Those who will not receive the warnings that God
gives will fall into the same perils as did ancient Israel and come
short of entering into rest through unbelief. Ancient Israel suffered
calamities on account of their
unsanctified hearts and unsubmitted wills. Their final rejection as a
nation was a result of their own unbelief, self-confidence, impenitence,
blindness of mind, and hardness of heart. In their history we have a
danger signal lifted before us.
“Take
heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief,
in departing from the living God.... For we are made partakers of
Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the
end” (Hebrews 3:12, 14).—Letter 30, 1895.
The Church Militant Is Imperfect
The
church militant is not the church triumphant, and earth is not heaven.
The church is composed of erring, imperfect men and women, who are but
learners in the school of Christ, to be trained, disciplined, educated,
for this life and for the future, immortal life.—The Signs of the Times, January 4, 1883.
Some
people seem to think that upon entering the church they will have their
expectations fulfilled, and meet only with those who are pure and
perfect. They are zealous in their faith, and when they see faults in
church members, they say, “We left the world in order to have no
association with evil characters, but the evil is here also;” and they
ask, as did the servants in the parable, “From whence then hath it
tares?” But we need not be thus disappointed, for the Lord has not
warranted us in coming to the conclusion that the church is perfect; and
all our zeal will not be successful in making the church militant as pure as the church triumphant.—Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, 47 (1893).
The Church Triumphant Will Be Faithful and Christlike
The work is soon to close. The members of the church militant who have proved faithful will become the church triumphant.—Evangelism, 707 (1892).
The
life of Christ was a life charged with a divine message of the love of
God, and He longed intensely to impart this love to others in rich
measure. Compassion beamed from His countenance, and His conduct was
characterized by grace, humility, truth, and love. Every member of His
church militant must manifest the same qualities, if he would join the
church triumphant.—Fundamentals of Christian Education, 179 (1891).You can Click Here to View our Alarm, set for You to Start Counting down for 2nd Coming of Our Lord Messiah Jesus Christ our King of 7th Day Holy Sabbath and of All Sealed 7th Day Holy Sabbath Keepers until Tuesday, 15 October 2024 (Chicago time).
